Before the space shuttle program's end in July NASA used the pool, which opened in 1996, primarily to train astronauts to construct the International Space Station. In the 200-foot-long pool there were mock-ups of both the station and shuttle. The neutrally buoyant conditions provide a simulation of low-gravity conditions.
